Power Talks

Six world powers holding talks in London on Iran's nuclear programme agreed Friday to push toward a third round of U.N. sanctions against Tehran if the stand-off persisted.

Political directors from the "E3" of Britain, France and Germany, plus the United States, Russia and China, backed the drive for a third United Nations Security Council resolution and vote on Iran, unless forthcoming reports showed "a positive outcome," said a spokesman for Britain's Foreign Office.

Meanwhile, Washington urged Beijing and Moscow to agree to a new set of sanctions, after what the United States said was a disappointing response by the two countries at the London talks.

The six powers again urged Tehran to end the stand-off through diplomacy, the Foreign Office spokesman said.

The political directors called on European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana to hold fresh talks with Iran's negotiator Saeed Jalili and report back later this month.
