Television Viewers Turn To Internet

More television viewers are turning to the Internet to watch videos, films and TV episodes, according to a new survey.
In the past year, YouTube has widened its lead as the top destination for online videos, while search engines and television networks have gained ground.
Approximately 65 percent of the 2,455 U.S. adults surveyed by Harris Interactive said they have watched a video on YouTube, compared to 42 percent during the same time last year.
More than one-third of viewers overall and half of those 18 to 24 said there is something they really enjoy about discovering a cool video online.
"They seem to take particular pride in their finds online and share them with friends," Barten Kline added.
More than 42 percent of YouTube viewers said they visit the site frequently, up from 33 percent last year.
Apart from YouTube, which most people favored because they felt it had almost every video they could find, 43 percent said they have watched a video on a TV network Web site, followed by 35 percent on news sites and less than 30 percent on search engines such as Yahoo and Google.

Third anniversary of the devastating Asian Tsunami.

Ceremonies have been taking place to mark the third anniversary of the devastating Asian Tsunami.
More than 200,000 people in 13 countries died in the 26 December 2004 disaster, which was triggered by an undersea earthquake.
At least 128,000 people died in Indonesia alone.
About 1,000 people attended an open-air prayer ceremony in a village outside Calang town in Indonesia's worst-affected province, Aceh.
Smaller ceremonies were held at mass graves and mosques across Aceh, which was closest to the quake epicentre, and where more than two-thirds of the deaths occurred.
In Banten province, a coastal area in Indonesia's main island of Java, a drill simulating a tsunami strike was held involving some 9,000 residents.
Authorities also tested the response of emergency relief teams to a mock chemical leak in a factory if an 8.5 magnitude quake were to hit the area.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and other government officials attended the drill.
In Sri Lanka services were held for the more than 30,000 people who were killed on the island.

Migraine has reason

Scientists may be a step closer to uncovering the cause of certain types of debilitating migraine headaches.

A French team observed activation in the hypothalamus region of the brain as sufferers had a migraine attack.

The hypothalamus has long been suspected as it regulates physiological responses to factors known to trigger headaches, such as hunger.

It is hoped the discovery, featured in the journal Headache, could lead to new treatments.

The researchers, from Rangueil Hospital , used a technique called Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which contrasts functional activity within the brain, on seven patients with migraine without aura, the most common type of migraine.

Previously, activation in the brain stem and midbrain, and a thickening in some areas of the cortex were seen in migraine sufferers.

The timing was crucial: to capture an attack as it happened, patients rushed to hospital without self-medicating, arriving on average around three hours after the onset of the migraine.

Millions of Christians around the world are marking Christmas Day - the traditional day of Christ's birth. In the West Bank town of Bethlehem, the Biblical site of Jesus' birth, thousands of worshippers gathered to celebrate midnight Mass.

Local officials in Bethlehem say double the number of pilgrims have visited this year compared to last. In Rome, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated a special Mass in St Peter's Basilica, watched by thousands of pilgrims. Those who were unable to join the congregation filling the church watched the Mass on giant video screens in the square instead.

A new floodlit Nativity scene was officially unveiled in the square in front of the Basilica. This year the larger-than-life-size statues of the baby Jesus and his family have been placed in a Nativity scene set not in a Bethlehem stable, but in a room in Joseph's house in Nazareth .

Opposition Parties Say Fake Election

An alliance of opposition parties in Pakistan has called on the public to boycott the polls.
The All Party Democratic Movement (APDM) has launched a public campaign to support their cause.
The APDM includes the party of former cricketer Imran Khan and the religious Jamaat-e-Islami party which was earlier part of an Islamic coalition.
They have found common ground in refusing to take part in the elections which are due to be held on 8 January.
Just as bigger opposition parties are starting to hold election rallies, the APDM has launched an anti-election campaign.
In a joint statement, they declared that the very basis for the elections was false.
President Musharraf had been re-elected unconstitutionally, they said - and he should quit.
The elections could only be genuine if the judges who had been removed from the Supreme Court were reinstated, they said.
The parties also said the Election Commission and the interim government should be fully neutral and independent, and that restrictions on the media should be lifted.

Rice Visits Iraq

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made an unannounced visit Tuesday to the city that Iraq's Kurds call their Jerusalem, an oil-rich territory claimed by many where the United States says it sees new signs of cooperation and progress.
Rice was seeing members of a civilian-military reconstruction unit based in Kirkuk and meeting provincial politicians of all stripes. She was meeting Iraq's central leadership later in Baghdad. Such reconstruction units were expanded along with the escalation of U.S. forces President Bush ordered this year.
Sunni Arabs ended a yearlong political boycott earlier this month in Kirkuk -- the hub of Iraq's northern oil fields -- under a deal that sets aside government posts for Arabs. It was the biggest step yet toward unity ahead of a referendum on the area's future.
Rice was highlighting that development, although a separate ethnic group is still boycotting the provincial governing council, and the new role of the United Nations in resolving the future of disputed Kirkuk.

Cuba's ailing communist leader, Fidel Castro, has said he has a duty not to hold on to power or obstruct the rise of younger people.Correspondents say the letter read on state TV is the first suggestion that the 81-year-old president may give up his position in Cuba's leadership. Last year he handed over power to his brother Raul on a temporary basis.
Since then, he has not made a public appearance - although the government has released pictures of Mr Castro.In the letter released on Monday, he said his duty was not to cling to office but "to pass on experiences and ideas whose modest value arises from the exceptional era in which I lived".
The message was delivered during Cuba's main nightly current affairs programme, Mesa Redonda.Fidel Castro has ruled Cuba since leading the 1959 revolution. Mr Castro must be re-elected to the assembly if he is to remain president of the Council of State.
Nationwide elections will be held on 20 January.

US chat show host Oprah Winfrey has appeared at a campaign rally in Iowa for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Over 18,000 people attended the event in the state capital, Des Moines.

Talks between Hollywood writers and Producer collapsed

Talks between striking screenwriters and Hollywood producers have broken down in Los Angeles. Now in its fifth week, the strike has closed down dozens of TV shows and delayed production on movies. With no sign of a breakthrough in this dispute over pay, each side is suggesting the other is to blame for a lack of progress in the negotiations.

The dispute centres on how writers should be compensated for their work when it appears on DVD or the Internet. The employers, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers blamed the breakdown on what it called an ongoing union strategy to delay or derail talks.

But in a letter sent to its members the Writers Guild of America accused the producers group of dragging its heels in putting new proposals on the table. The Alliance said that wasn't the case and suggested the union had failed to respond to specific proposals regarding pay for work in new media, such as the Internet.

President Bush Splits

President Bush announced news steps to help homeowners struggling with their mortgage payments.  However, the president gave the wrong phone number to millions of viewers watching his statement on live TV.

President Bush said, "I directed Secretaries Paulson and Jackson to expand the public awareness campaign.  And I have a message for every homeowner worried about rising mortgage payments:  The best you can do for your family is to call 1-800-995-HOPE." 

However the president was off by a few digits.  The real phone number is 1-888-995-HOPE. 

The original phone number President Bush read to viewers apparently belongs to the Freedom Christian Academy which has a full mailbox according to a recorded message heard by an ABC News producer.

The White House immediately sent an email correction to members of the press and a very loud overhead page was heard in the press room at the White House announcing the correct phone number.

War Equipment Missing in Iraq

Tractor trailers, tank recovery vehicles, crates of machine guns and rocket propelled grenades are just a sampling of more than $1 billion in unaccounted for military equipment and services provided to the Iraqi security forces, according to a new report issued today by the Pentagon Inspector General and obtained exclusively by the CBS News investigative unit. Auditors for the Inspector General reviewed equipment contracts totaling $643 million but could only find an audit trail for $83 million.

The report details a massive failure in government procurement revealing little accountability for the billions of dollars spent purchasing military hardware for the Iraqi security forces. For example, according to the report, the military could not account for 12,712 out of 13,508 weapons, including pistols, assault rifles, rocket propelled grenade launchers and machine guns.
The report comes on the same day that Army procurement officials will face tough questions from the Senate Armed Services Committee regarding their procurement policies.

Air Ambulances

United States have done a lot of development in each sector. From ocean to moon, from education to business and from peacekeeping to war :). Obviously it is one of the developed and dominating the world in each part of development. So in Medical sector too. I came across air ambulance websites which I have not seen before. I doubt that there is same facility in any other country. Specially if the way is long, its hard to travel in normal Air Plane with patients.   I feel so sorry about those countries.

Salary Matters: Houston Nutt

A University of Arkansas private fundraising arm approved a salary supplement Wednesday for Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe, a strong indication that Grobe will replace Houston Nutt as the Razorbacks' coach.

There was no word from the university, however, on whether Grobe would replace Nutt, who quit Nov. 26 and was hired almost immediately by Mississippi.

The Razorback Foundation raises funds privately for Arkansas athletic programs and pays coaches amounts far beyond their regular state salaries. Nutt, for instance, made $330,000 annually from the state but had a compensation package worth $1.5 million a year — much of the extra coming from Foundation funds.

Ralph Bradbury, a member of the Razorback Foundation's board of directors, confirmed Wednesday night the foundation had approved a deal for Grobe. He said he couldn't confirm for sure that Grobe's hiring was final because that issue remains in the hands of athletic director Jeff Long and Grobe himself.

Good time in business trip

Generally people don't do this way but I like it. Since I'm the boss of my office If I manage some time to visit place in my business trip no one will stop me. So, I often go to see places even after I finish my business deals when I go abroad. Since I am very much interested to see new places so I work harder when I'm in office so that I can take out sometimes to visit places. Last time, I visited Kauai. I had heard a lot about the goodness of Kauai vacation rentals and found that even better.I only spend 2 days there so I didn't get chance to see other places in Hawaii.

Media Talent Group's Geyer Kosinski — Jolie's manager — is producing. Kosinski and IPG's Joel Gotler, who will help Austin shop around her memoirs early next year, put together a pitch similar to The Bourne Identity, and Paramount production president Brad Weston gave it the green light. The studio and Kosinksi will choose a writer for the project once the strike is over. Jolie is currently shooting the Clint Eastwood-directed drama The Changeling for Universal, Imagine, and Malpaso.

Chavez Asks Vote for Socialism

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is facing his toughest challenge in years as voters decide whether to approve constitutional changes in a referendum.

The raft of reforms includes allowing abolishing presidential term limits and ending the Central Bank's autonomy.

Mr Chavez says the proposed changes would return power to the people, but opponents accuse him of a power grab.

On Saturday, President Chavez repeated a threat to stop oil supplies to the US if it tried to disrupt the ballot.

Mr Chavez has warned that his opponents could try to sabotage the vote, with backing from Washington, through violent protests.

At a news conference, he said: "In the case of an aggression by the US government, we wouldn't send any more oil to that country. Forget about our oil."

Opec member Venezuela currently exports about 60% of its oil to the United States - a trade worth an estimated $37bn (£18.5bn) a year.

Facebook Lunched New Advertising System

Seeking to keep the peace in its popular online hangout, Facebook Inc. has overhauled a new advertising system that sparked privacy complaints by turning its users into marketing tools for other companies.

Under the changes outlined late Thursday, Facebook's 55 million users will be given greater control over whether they want to participate in a three-week-old program that circulates potentially sensitive information about their online purchases and other activities.

Facebook provided two different opportunities to block the details from being shared, but many users said they never saw the "opt-out" notices before they disappeared from the screen.

With the reforms, Facebook promised its users will now have to give their explicit consent, or "opt-in," before any information is passed along.

The concessions were made after more than 50,000 Facebook users signed an online petition blasting the system, called "Beacon," as a galling intrusion that put the Palo Alto-based startup's pursuit of profit ahead of its members' privacy interests.

Interim Football Coach of Few Nebraska

Few Nebraska football fans are going to argue with Tom Osborne's decision on an interim head coach.

Already the interim athletic director, Osborne declared himself the coach until he hires a successor to Bill Callahan, allowing Nebraska's beloved former coach to visit prospective recruits and try to prevent the program from slipping during the recruiting contact period.

Athletic department communications Chief Randy York said the 70-year-old Osborne, who took over the department after the firing of Steve Pederson last month, passed an NCAA certification test on his first try Wednesday and has informed the Big 12 office of his new title.

Osborne was unavailable for comment Thursday. York said he would be on the road recruiting through the end of the week.

Gary Bargen, assistant athletic director in charge of compliance, said the interim AD tag would have limited Osborne to meeting with prospective recruits only if they visited campus. Now he can visit recruits in schools and homes until Dec. 15.
